Transformer Impedance

Your AC Transformers FAQ

Transformer Impedance is a term we not be very familiar with but is a transformerTransformer Impedance rating system much like power, temperature, current, and voltage.  Transformer Impedance is an equally important rating used for electrical equipment, including transformers.

With a transformer, impedance is a variable comprised of both resistance and reactance.  This variable with transformers is a percentage impedance.  Because the transformer is always interposed between primary and secondary loads, the transformer represents an impedance to current flow from source to load.

With Transformer Impedance, when current flows through resistance, the resulting loss of energy becomes wasted heat.  When Transformer Impedance is known, the transformer engineering and design can focus on minimizing the resistive components.  For this reason, transformer impedances are treated as reactive in most voltage drop calculations.  The terms percent reactance and percent impedance can, thereby, be used interchangeablyTransformer Impedance

Transformer Impedance can be easily determined with a simple test.    The steps to perform this impedance evaluation are as follows:

  • Short circuit secondary terminals.

  • Apply low voltage to the primary terminals.

  • Increase the voltage until the measured current in the short circuit secondary terminals reaches the rated ampere value.

  • The ratio of the primary voltage to the rated voltage is then multiplied by 100 to give the transformer impedance in percentage form.
