AC Transformer Temperatures and Hot Transformer Case are important topics to be aware of.  The assumption is often made that transformers run hot and their cases, in turn, may also be hot.   In actuality, a transformer's Temperatures and Hot Transformer Case may be warm to very warm, but not hot.  Because the exertion of heat is indicative of energy loss, a hot transformer is actually an indicator of transformer inefficiency which may be occurring for a variety of reasons.  Some of those reasons include the following:

  • Insulation which has broken down or worn out over time due to usage and high temperatures.

  • Overstressed from the rigors of the applications with which it is used. 

  • External factors which drive up the temperature of the transformer.

When more power is demanded from a transformer than it is designed to give, excessive heat is the result.  A hot transformer should be a signal that the transformer is in need of a check up.

  • Below 100F Generally considered cold or cool in transformer terms

  • Between 100F and 110F- Generally are considered warm.

  • Above 120F Generally considered hot.

  • Above 130F Generally considered hot and may also cause 2nd or 3rd degree burns on skin.

With Temperatures and Hot Transformer Case, many transformers are specifically designed to run safely at temps up to 200F but they utilize high-temperature insulation systems.
