How Do AC Transformers Work?

Your AC Transformers FAQ

How Do AC Transformers Work?  To answer this question, it is important to understand the basic structure of an AC transformer and the purpose an ACHow Do AC Transformers Work? transformer serves.  The central component of an AC transformer is the ferromagnetic core which is wound with two coils or windings.  The two coils, or windings, are called primary and secondary coils or windings.

The primary winding is connected to the electrical source while the secondary winding handles the load or output.  The purpose of an AC transformer is to convert AC power at a certain voltage level to AC power at a different voltage, all without changing frequencies.  Now that we've defined structure and purpose, we can delve further into How Do AC Transformers Work.

To continue on with How Do AC Transformers Work, a magnetic field is generated around the winding, when alternating current  passes through it. Corresponding alternating current, or “induction,” occurs when a secondary winding is brought within the magnetic field, creating an alternating current within this winding.  Within the primary winding, alternating current induces an alternating magnetic flux.  This flux flows around the ferromagnetic core while changing direction with each cycle.  An alternating current is created in each of the secondary windings by the alternating flux in the core.

How Do AC Transformers Work in terms of voltage is another excellentHow Do AC Transformers Work? question to address.  The number of turns in the primary winding divided by the number of turns in the secondary winding plus primary voltage by the turns ratios determines the voltage induced in each of the secondary windings.  Turns ratio determines primary voltage to the secondary voltage and the primary current to the secondary current.  Selecting the correct number of turns is an easy way to rise or lower our voltage.  Multiple secondary windings may come into play to feed multiple electrical loads.
